What is a REAL ID?
The REAL ID Act, a federal law passed in 2005, establishes comprehensive minimum security standards that states must meet when issuing driver's licenses and identification cards. These standards cover both the physical production of the ID and the verification process needed for issuance. The primary goal is to enhance the integrity of government-issued identification to strengthen national security.
Why is it important now?
Starting May 7, 2025, TSA requires all individuals aged 18 and older to present a REAL ID-compliant document for three specific "official purposes":
Boarding Federally Regulated Commercial Aircraft (Domestic Flights)
Accessing Federal Facilities (like military bases or certain government buildings)
Entering Nuclear Power Plants
To obtain a REAL ID, you must apply at your state's DMV or equivalent agency and provide specific documentation proving: Identity (e.g., U.S. Passport or Green Card), Social Security Number, and Residency. If your current ID has a star in the upper right-hand corner, you are already compliant. Travelers who do not have a REAL ID must carry another TSA-approved form of identification, such as a U.S. Passport or Employment Authorization Card (I-766), to fly.
